Review: Crewel (Crewel World #1) by Gennifer Albin

Title: Crewel (Crewel World #1)
Author: Gennifer Albin
Published:  October 16th 2012 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR)
Book taken from Netgalley
Book Description:
Incapable. Awkward. Artless.

That’s what the other girls whisper behind her back. But sixteen year-old Adelice Lewys has a secret: she wants to fail.

Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen as a Spinster is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to embroider the very fabric of life. But if controlling what people eat, where they live and how many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t interested.

Not that her feelings matter, because she slipped and wove a moment at testing, and they’re coming for her—tonight.

Now she has one hour to eat her mom’s overcooked pot roast. One hour to listen to her sister’s academy gossip and laugh at her Dad’s stupid jokes. One hour to pretend everything’s okay. And one hour to escape.

Because once you become a Spinster, there’s no turning back.

Spolight: Catherine by April Lindner (Interview and Giveaway)

 Catherine by April Lindner

Book Description:
A forbidden romance. A modern mystery. Wuthering Heights as you've never seen it before.
Catherine is tired of struggling musicians befriending her just so they can get a gig at her Dad's famous Manhattan club, The Underground. Then she meets mysterious Hence, an unbelievably passionate and talented musician on the brink of success. As their relationship grows, both are swept away in a fiery romance. But when their love is tested by a cruel whim of fate, will pride keep them apart?
Chelsea has always believed that her mom died of a sudden illness, until she finds a letter her dad has kept from her for years -- a letter from her mom, Catherine, who didn't die: She disappeared. Driven by unanswered questions, Chelsea sets out to look for her -- starting with the return address on the letter: The Underground.

Told in two voices, twenty years apart, Catherine interweaves a timeless forbidden romance with a compelling modern mystery.

Check out our 4.5 Whales Review on Jane: HERE

April Lindner
Interview:

1.     Give us 3 interesting facts about you (Be Creative)
Fact one: When I was in high school, I had a peculiar hobby.  I invented a rock band (called ZAP) and made up biographies for the band’s four members; I drew endless pictures of them and made up stories about them.  I wrote lyrics for their songs.  All of this turned out to be very good practice for writing novels about rock musicians.

Fact two:  I have an unreasonable fondness for rodents, especially Tootsie and Leeloo, my pet guinea pigs, whom I got from a guinea pig rescue.  They’re very gentle and sweet, and they make an otherworldly wheek wheek wheek noise whenever I walk by their cage—so I walk by their cage a lot just to hear it.

Fact three:  I’m obsessed with all things Italian…the language, the food, the culture.  Sometimes I fall asleep with my iPod plugged in, listening to language tapes and Italian pop  music in hopes that Italian will miraculously seep into my sleeping brain.  Last summer when I was in Italy for a week to research my next book, I found to my amazement, that it worked.  After many years of trying, all of a sudden my I could speak Italian…not brilliantly, but enough to have basic conversations.

2. Some of your favorite books published this 2012 ?
John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars blew me away.  It’s funny, heartbreaking, smart, and just plain beautifully written.  Jennifer E. Smith’s The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sightwas charming and utterly engrossing.

3. Can you share a little about your current work with us (Catherine)?
Catherine, my second novel, is a modernization of Wuthering Heights.  Like the original it’s a story of obsessive love, told over two decades.  The story’s told in two voices. The first is Catherine, whose father owns The Underground, a legendary club in New York City.  Catherine is tired of being befriended by struggling musicians just so they can get a gig at her dad’s club.  But then a mysterious, talented musician named Hence shows up on her doorstep, and Catherine finds herself swept away in an intense and fiery romance that is ultimately tested by fate.

The second voice belongs to Chelsea, Catherine’s daughter, who has long believed her mother died of a brief illness.  Then Chelsea finds a letter her dad has kept from her for years—a letter that implies Catherine didn’t die after all: she disappeared.  Feeling betrayed and angry, Chelsea runs away in search of her mother.  Her first destination is the return address on the letter: The Underground.

4. Jane Eyre is one of my favorites. I was thrilled that you made a  modern retelling. Can you share your favorite quote or scene from the book?
My absolute favorite scene in a book full of amazing scenes is the moment under the chestnut tree when Jane can’t hold back anymore; she blurts out her love for Mr. Rochester and accuses him of tormenting her.  Her words to him—“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong — I have as much soul as you, — and full as much heart”—never fail to thrill me, no matter how many times I read them.

5.  Can you give us a "Teaser" on your upcoming book, Catherine?
What I’ve always loved about Wuthering Heights is the way it depicts out-of-control passion—violent love and equally violent hatred.  Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff aren’t the nicest of people, in fact they’re often downright hateful, to each other and those around them.  I’ll confess here and now that I didn’t have the heart to make my characters as  ruthless as Cathy and Heathcliff.  So Catherine contains passion and occasional acts of cruelty, but none of my characters are purely hateful.  In fact, the two characters I set out to make relatively cruel and edgy wound up becoming the two I loved most by the time I was through.

Waiting on Wednesday #19

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly post started by Breaking the Spine, to show books that we are patiently waiting for.

The book we're waiting for this week is:
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
by April Genevieve Tucholke
Expected publication: August 2012 by Dial/Penguin
Book Description:
Violet’s grandmother had warned her about the Devil, had talked about him often, as though he were a best friend, or an old lover. But she never told Violet that the Devil could be real. She never told Violet that the Devil could be a dark-haired boy in vintage clothes who takes naps in the sun and likes old movies and vigilante justice.

River West is the seventeen-year old stranger renting the guesthouse behind the rotting mansion on the sea, where Violet lives. And as eerie things start happening in Violet’s town, she begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard. Is River just a crooked-smiling, coffee-loving liar with rascally eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something else? Something...evil?

Violet’s already so knee-deep in love she can’t see straight.

And that’s just how River likes it.

Why I'm excited for this:
The summary left me wanting for more. It's haunting! It gave me goosebumps. Plus I'll read this book because of the cover alone :)

Waiting on Wednesday #19

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly post started by Breaking the Spine, to show books that we are patiently waiting for.

The book we're waiting for this week is:
Death's Apprentice: A Grim City Novel by K.W Jeter and Gareth Jefferson Jones
Expected publication: October 30 by Thomas Dunne Books
Book Description:
Forget about Once Upon a Time . . .

Built on top of the gates of Hell, Grimm City is the Devil’s capital on earth. A place where every coffee shop, nightclub and shopping mall is the potential hunting ground for a ghost, a demon, or any of the other supernatural entities that inhabit the Grimm City world.

Death’s seventeen-year-old apprentice, Nathaniel, comes into his own as he leads an uprising against the Devil with the help of a half-dead wraith and a giant hit-man. What results is a bloody, brutal revolt that calls upon the loyalties of both the living and the dead.

Based not only upon the Brothers Grimm well-known fairy tales, but also upon their “unknown” sagas and essays, Death's Apprentice is the first novel to be based upon the entire Grimm canon. Such a comprehensive, in-depth adaptation of the works of the Brothers Grimm has never been published before!

Why I'm excited for this:
It's inspired by the Brother's Grimm popular fairy tales.
The plot seems magical and dark.
"also upon their “unknown” sagas and essays"--- This made me so curious.

Blog Tour Review: Carnival of Souls by Melissa Marr (Review and Giveaway)

Title: Carnival of Souls
Author: Melissa Marr
Published:  September 4th by HarperCollins
Book given by the publisher
Book Description:
In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures--if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.

All Mallory knows of The City is that her father--and every other witch there--fled it for a life in exile in the human world. Instead of a typical teenage life full of friends and maybe even a little romance, Mallory scans quiet streets for threats, hides herself away, and trains to be lethal. She knows it's only a matter of time until a daimon finds her and her father, so she readies herself for the inevitable. While Mallory possesses little knowledge of The City, every inhabitant of The City knows of her. There are plans for Mallory, and soon she, too, will be drawn into the decadence and danger that is the Carnival of Souls.

From Melissa Marr, bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series and "Graveminder," comes a brand-new tale of lush secrets, dark love, and the struggle to forge one's own destiny.
