Review: Article 5 (Article 5 #1) by Kristen Simmons

Title: Article 5 (Article 5 #1)
Author: Kristen Simmons
Published: Jan 31st 2012 by Tor Teen
Book Description:
New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.
The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.
There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.
Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard for her to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It’s hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.
Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.
That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.

My Thoughts:
"You're home. To me.”

Wow! This book blew me away. I love dystopian books with adventure on it. This book is a must read! I’ve been eyeing on this book since last year. After reading the plot, I was salivating to read it. The only thing that I don’t like is the cover; it’s too dry for me.

The story is brilliantly written; I was hooked. The story is unique!  Simmon’s wrote a very frightening world. It reminds me of The Nazi’s during World War II. Ember’s world is controlled my Moral Statutes and is implied by soldiers. Once you broke one of the rules, you will be arrested and set on trial. But Ember is questioning why some people don’t ever come back. The story took a great turn when Ember’s mother was arrested due to the violation of Article 5. Chase, Ember’s old love was one of the soldiers who arrested her mother. She felt betrayed since she thought Chase would help her. She struggled to save her mother and made a grave mistake of hurting one of the soldiers. She was then forced into rehab, where ill-discipline citizens were made into role models. The so called Rehab is a cruel place; no one is safe. People there are submitted to embrace the Moral Statues; and brutal punishments are used for discipline. Ember will do anything to escape and to find her mother. Can she escape without getting killed? Is her dear old Chase, the same loving person? Or Now one of the wicked soldiers?

The story is full of action and adventure. I have many nail-biting and heart-stopping moments. I feel like I was the one escaping not Ember LOL. I love Chase!!! I adore him and his courage despite the consequences. Their relationship melted my heart. They are meant to be! The scenes were brilliantly made; it was gruesome, raw and emotional. I like how it was vividly described.  This book will not disappoint you.

Overall, this book is a dazzling read!! If you love Under the Never Sky or A Touch of Power, you would love this book. I look forward for book two!

I give this book, 5 whales
