Review: Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna #1) by Kendare Blake

Title: Anna Dressed in Blood (Covenant #1)
Author: Kendare Blake
Published: August 30th 2011 by Tor Teen

Book Description:

Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story. . .

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until his gruesome murder by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: move, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, but now stained red and dripping blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

And she, for whatever reason, spares his life.

My Thoughts:

Anna Dressed in Blood.
I wonder what tricks she’ll try. I wonder if she’ll be clever. Will she float? Will she laugh or scream?
How will she try to kill me?

Anna dressed in blood was one of the best books I’ve read last 2011. IT.WAS.SO.EFFING.AWESOME! That’s how much I loved it. At first I thought this will just be a typical ghost/murder story, but there was so much more once I’ve read it that I didn’t quite expected.
Kendare Blake did such an awesome job and I commend her for it. The way she wrote all those scary/gory scenes were so believable that I really felt Goosebumps all over my skin.
Cas followed his father’s footsteps as a ghost hunter after he died a brutal death in the hands of one of the ghosts he’s hunting. With the athame in hand, he goes all around the country putting all of the dangerous ghosts to “rest”. Never did he imagine that he will encounter a powerful ghost one day. The infamous Anna who was killed on the night of her prom, her once beautiful white dress now stained red with her own blood. They called her Anna dressed in blood.
I really love the characters in this book, especially Anna. She’s strong, deadly, and really kicks ass, but at the same time, she’s also a sweet and innocent girl. Once I get to know her, I instantly fell in-love with her character. Cas is also one of my faves and he never fails to make me smile with his antics.
I devoured everything in Anna Dressed in Blood, from its breath-taking cover down to the very last sentence of the book. It’s fast-paced, action packed, and of course with a bit of romance.

I am so looking forward for the next book.

I give this book five whales.

  1. I really enjoyed this book - it was well-written, spooky and engaging. However, I was stupefied to discover that it was rated for "young adults." There is a good deal of very intense gore and a lot of swearing - the f-bomb was dropped twice just in chapter two, and that was a short chapter. I have no problem with such, and I imagine a lot of "young people" today don't either, but I would also imagine that their parents would have a problem with it. So, I'm warning anyone that might be bothered by this - lots of gore and some swearing to boot.

That said, I would recommend this book - I liked it a great deal and I think many people would. Give it a look if the above caveat doesn't apply to you!

  2. Best part of the review for this book from you, or anyone else, IT.WAS.SO.EFFING.AWESOME! There is no other way to review this but saying that one sentence!

We really appreciate it if you can leave a comment and tell us what you think!
