Review: The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

Buy The Book
Title: The Bone Season
Author: Samantha Shannon
Publication: August 20, 3013 by Bloomsburry
Book Description:

It is the year 2059. Several major world cities are under the control of a security force called Scion. Paige Mahoney works in the criminal underworld of Scion London, part of a secret cell known as the Seven Seals. The work she does is unusual: scouting for information by breaking into others’ minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare kind of clairvoyant, and in this world, the voyants commit treason simply by breathing.

But when Paige is captured and arrested, she encounters a power more sinister even than Scion. The voyant prison is a separate city—Oxford, erased from the map two centuries ago and now controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. These creatures, the Rephaim, value the voyants highly—as soldiers in their army.

Paige is assigned to a Rephaite keeper, Warden, who will be in charge of her care and training. He is her master. Her natural enemy. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives.

The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine—a young woman learning to harness her powers in a world where everything has been taken from her. It also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.

My Thoughts:

The world building created by Samantha Shannon is unbelievable. Ideas were fresh and so new to me that it is one of the best books I read this year.

I warn you, lots of new words and things in this book so for the first few chapters I suggest you read with a full concentration so that you will not be lost throughout the books. But The good thing is that once you get the hang of it the book will be an easy read for you. Besides, the author had a knack of reminding you once in a while of certain things and it really helped a lot in reading this book.

Paige is easily one of the strongest character I have read. Her personality is what made me love her. All throughout the book there's a perfect balance of her being strong and also weak.

Pacing of the book is a little bit boring at some parts. That's my only negative thing.

The strongest point of this book as I have said is the world building. It draws you in so easily and it makes you want to read more. I am just sad that book 2 is so far away.

Even the villains are strong. You sense that they are really the villains. The way they are portrayed makes you hate them too.

And there's a lot of potential. There are things that I feel like we haven't seen yet and I already feel that it will be fucking amazing.

I am a fan.

One of the best books this year for me. 5 Whales!

  1. Woo-hoo! I adored the world-building in this novel as well and am absolutely hooked onto the characters. I can't wait for the sequel, releasing later this year, and especially more of that slow-burn romance. Wonderful review! :)

  2. I have to agree I struggled a bit too in the beginning with this book, but the second half completely blew me away, so glad that you enjoyed this too! Great review! :)
